Trauma and Recovery: The Aftermath of Violence from Domestic Abuse to Political Terror, by Judith Herman, M.D. (1997). Basic Books; ISBN 0465087302

I'll admit, I have this but haven't read it yet. But Herman is considered the top in her field when it comes to trauma recovery, and this book is considered MUST reading for anyone touched by trauma. Her books are recommended by the National Center for PTSD. Here is an excerpt from the book description:

"...a psychology classic, called one of the most important psychiatric works since Freud, containing a new afterword by its author...discusses how violence in all forms affects its survivors and how those survivors cope."
